IFEP and APEC Study Center: The Pitfalls and Opportunities of Investing in China and Asia
The SIPA IFEP Concentration and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Study Center present the 2012 Distinguished Speaker in International Finance and Economic Policy, Tan ChinHwee, co-Head of Asia for Apollo Global Management, on "The Pitfalls and Opportunities of Investing in China and Asia." Professor Merit E. Janow, Director of the IFEP Concentration and Professor in the Practice of International Economic Law and International Affairs, will moderate. Professor David O. Beim, Professor of Professional Practice in Finance and Economics and Bernstein Faculty Leader at the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics, will offer comments. A reception will follow.
Mr. Tan is the co-Head of Asia for Apollo Global Management, a leading USD72bn global alternative investor. He is voted by the Hedge Fund Journal as among the emerging top 40 absolute return investors globally and is also named as Best Asia Credit Hedge Fund by The Asset. Mr Tan is honored as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders 2010 and is a member of the Resource Panel for Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry for Singapore government.
Prior to joining Apollo (Singapore), Mr. Tan was a managing director at Amaranth, where he pioneered a number of historic capital market "firsts" in public and private investment opportunities across the capital structure in India, Singapore, Pakistan, Indonesia and Taiwan from June 2003. Prior to joining Amaranth, from September 2001 to May 2003, Mr. Tan worked part-time for Derosa Research and Trading Inc. as a forensic accounting associate while pursuing his MBA education at Yale School of Management on a DBS Bank sponsorship. He received a Bachelor of Accountancy degree and graduated with 2nd Class Upper Honors in 1995 from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore on a Keppel group sponsorship. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and is both an Australian and Singapore-registered Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has completed an executive program at Harvard Kennedy School. Mr. Tan speaks fluent Mandarin, Taiwanese and Cantonese and he has taken lessons on Bahasa Indonesia up to intermediary level.
Mr Tan is a Board Member a listed REIT associated with Temasek that has the largest Grade A office space in Singapore. Mr Tan is also a Board Member of the CFA Society in Singapore and Lien Aid, a foundation associated with Nanyang Technological University to address water and sanitation issues in Asia. He volunteered his time with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Singapore and Indonesia Stock Exchange on Forensic Accounting and is on the global CFA Speaker Retainer Program. Mr Tan is an Adjunct Professor teaching Masters students at the Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. Mr Tan is a winner of the Young NTU Alumni Award in 2011.
